Late last night my friend Kekoa and I were trespassing in an old abandoned government bunker when Kekoa found a small artifact amongst the rubble in a dark corner. It looked like a small pear with a stem coming out of each end. In fact, it WAS a pear. Or a similar piece of fruit anyway. The top of the pear was wrapped tightly with a red fabric band and where the bottom stem attached there was a tiny white granular ball. Kekoa picked it up and seemed to be overcome with fear. He handed it to me and said he had to go. As I protested, he turned and said "Shane, I want you to figure out what that thing is. But I don't want to have anything to do with it."
Frustrated and a bit scared myself, I sought my friend Curt's opinion. With a knack for the supernatural and a strong sense of spirituality I assumed he would be able to help me. As I neared his home I found myself fumbling with the pear, trying to discover its locked secrets. I held it upside down, by only the stems. I tried spinning it like a top. I squeezed the top and bottom and suddenly something happened. As soon as I had lightly squeezed the two ends of the pear together the bottom stem had started to rotate slowly; like a fan. It startled me and I dropped it. It lay motionless on the ground, pretending like it hadn't just come alive in my hands. I stooped over and picked it up again, this time determined to solve the mystery. I placed my thumb on one end and my forefinger on the other. My thumb rubbed against the small white granular ball and my finger felt like it could slip right off the top of the pear, but I squeezed. The stem began again to rotate. The harder I squeezed, the faster it rotated until I seemed to see a dim white light emitting from the bottom of the pear. At first the light was weak and directional, like a flashlight. I squeezed harder and now the stem was spinning furiously. As the pressure between my fingers grew, the light began to increase in intensity and width. Soon the entire bottom of the pear was emitting a solid white glow in all directions. But I was not afraid. I pressed even harder on the two ends of the pear and I noticed the light change hue slightly from white to blue. The light also began to take on a shape, like a quickly rotating disc, perpendicular to the pear and similar in most respects to the shield of Captain America. I was squeezing as hard as I could and the pear had a blue, glowing disc about 4 feet in diameter emitting from it's bottom stem.
For lack of strength I let go and the pear quickly slowed and returned to its "normal" state. I ran to Curt's house, overcome with emotion and excitement. Curt, of course, was fascinated by the thing. I was surprised that like Kekoa, he too was weary and a bit apprehensive of its power. I had never felt fear or anxiety about the object I held in my hands. But after some time Curt decided to permit some experimentation. I repeated the steps as I had on the forest path earlier and soon found myself in Curt's room, lit by the solid blue light emanating from the light disc. The next step was obvious. Curt reached his hand slowly into the disc. We watched in wonder as his hand passed through the light and seemed to vanish. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a disembodied hand hovering about 4 feet off the floor on the other side of the room. As Curt pushed his hand deeper into the disc, his arm also appeared, his whole arm and hand appearing out of thin air 10 feet away from us. I urged Curt to walk into the disc, that it was safe. He did. His entire body erupted from the invisible portal on the opposite side of the room. I let go of the pear and we stared at each other, wide grins forming on our faces. He described it as being similar to the video game "Portal" wherein one generates discs that allow one to warp instantly from one place to another. He experimented all through the night. Soon we had mastered jumping through the disc and landing in another location. But we had class in the morning so we got ready for school and I placed the pear gently in my bag.
When we got to school there were a dozen or more black vans parked outside the main office. As we approached the building we were apprehended by some government officials and brought inside to a prepared interrogation room. Out of fear, and feeling like these men genuinely had my best interest in mind, I procured the pear from my bag and returned it to them. They asked me and Curt both to remain silent about this object and that any rumors and stories spread would be linked directly to us with dire consequences. They let us go and we walked into class.
Then I woke up.
